Hitchin started their 2018 campaign with a victory against Old Merchant Taylors at Old Hale Way, but left it until  the closing minutes before clinching the win

They started well, after just two minutes, with Ali Southward picking up a deft kick by number 10 Ben Wiggins to score in  the corner, duly converted by Wiggins.

But sSeveral mistakes by Hitchin let OMT’s back into the game after 10 minutes, crossing the line for an unconverted try after Hitchin were penalised in their own 22

After 20 minutes Wiggins extended the lead with a penalty to lead by 5 points

In the set pieces Hitchin were on top in the scrummaging, but the line outs were less successful, with OMT’s denying them much possession

Just before half time, with the visitors pressing on the Hitchin line, a relieving kick found the OMTs backs who ran the ball back through some poor tackling to cross in the corner for a second unconverted try to level the score at 10-10

The OMT’s backs were showing signs of their potential, but it was Hitchin who opened the second half with an unconverted try from winger Will Rooney

After 15 mines OMT’s drew level again, and from the kick off they took the lead when poor tackling and excellent support play allowed them to run in under the posts to take a 7 point lead

A yellow card against OMT’s with ten minutes to go allowed Hitchin to exploit the numerical advantage to go over from a 5m scrum, with Rooney again  touching down, to bring the scores level once again

The home side were now looking for a forth bonus point try and victory, and were pressing on the OMT’s line when skipper James Bolter stretched out to touch down, but with  the referee unsighted

However, with a minute to go Hitchin were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, which Wiggins converted for a hard fought win
