Words of wisdom !
Old Streetonians , currently fourth in the league , won this encounter
comfortably enough against a Hitchin side unable at times to match a fast &
strong back line .
The visitors kicked off with the breeze in their favour, and
had most of the possession and territory for the first five minutes or so.
Hitchin eventually cleared to halfway, but were soon back on the defensive, and
were penalised in front of their posts to give Streets an early 3 point advantage
An interception on halfway gave the visitors the chance to run
in a unopposed try, but a good chase by winger Will Rooney forced an error and
the ball was not grounded
After 15 minutes Hitchin’s pack drove a 10 m scrum forward for James Bolter to break off and feed scrum half Will Evens who dashed
over for an unconverted try ,and a 5-3 lead.
Streets came straight back, and from a line out on the Hitchin
5 m line, gained possession and drove over for a try , duly converted
A further try quickly followed
as the Hitchin defence was caught out and poor tackling let in the opposition backs
for 5 points
Although the Hitchin pack were holding their own in the scrums,
the line outs were going Streets’ way, and before half time they made the most
of the possession gained to run in two
more tries , to take a 27 -5 lead and a
try bonus point
Hitchin started the second half with the words
of their coach ringing in their ears. From a line out on the visitors 5 m line they
drove over the line but the ball was adjudged held up. They continued the pressure
on the line for some time as Streets were penalised four times,
resulting in a yellow card to give Hitchin
a numerical advantage .Finally Streets managed to clear to halfway and back in
the home side’s 22 converted a penalty to extend their lead
Back on the visitors 10m line, Hitchin lost the lineout for
Streets to run through the scrambled defence to score in he right hand corner, the
conversion giving them a lead 37 -5
Entering into the last quarter, centre Carwyn Morgan ran in
for a try from loose play, to reduce the deficit by 7 points
But with ten minutes left, Streets ran in two more tries
against a tired and ineffective defence to win by 51 -12
