1st XV 33 v 7 U.C.S. Old Boys RFC - Away League on 9 Feb 2019

The Hedgehogs returned to the top of Herts/Middlesex 1 league , with  a five try  bonus point  victory against  UCS Old Boys, on a heavy pitch  at Hendon RFC

UCS kicked off, with the  strong wind behind them, down the slope on a pitch that resembled a paddy field in some places.  A penalty against Hitchin was kicked for a lineout 5m out from which UCS attacked, but the ball was dropped and Hitchin were able to clear their line, but lost theirNo.8  Armel Baufume to a knee  injury

Hitchin continued to attack up the slope with breaks by Tom Tidey and Ali Southward, who regathered a UCS kick and made ground into the UCS half.  Several phases later a Hitchin offload was intercepted by the UCS winger who ran from inside his own half to score under the posts for a converted try.

With half tine approaching, the next score came from a penalty against UCS which was kicked for a lineout 10m out from their line.  After several phases during which the forwards were repelled by a stout defence, the ball was switched back to Ali Southward who went over from 10m out under the posts ,to make the conversion for Ben Wiggins a relatively simple one in the wind.

Turning round,  with Hitchin now playing with the wind &  down the slope, their forwards started to dominate and a period of pressure on the UCS line yielded a pushover try for James Bolter, which went unconverted.

After 10 minutes, Will Rooney got the next try following an excellent passage of play with forwards and backs combining, and Ben Wiggins adding the conversion from near touch

Hitchin continued to attack and opted for a scrum when UCS were penalised for offside, went for the pushover but the ball was knocked on in the attempt; however from the UCS scrum, Hitchin pushed their opponents over their line for Bolter to touch down for a try, converted by Ben Wiggins.

With 15 minutes  to go, the kick off by UCS didn’t go the 10m and from  the resulting scrum Hitchin worked the ball deep into UCS territory, to enable Bolter to crash over for his third try, again converted by Ben Wiggins.

UCS came back into the Hitchin half with several phases of play but they were successfully repelled by the Hitchin defence, who held out for the final whistle
